Specific difficulties relating to Chinese are many fold. The Chinese language doesn't use an alphabet and the writing system is not very phonetic. Looking up a word in the dictionary is complicated and there is also classical Chinese (wenyanwen). This has been complicated by the use of too many Romanisation methods and compounded because Chinese is a tonal language.
China has a population of over 1.3 billion people and Chinese is classified as a macro language. Chinese translations, however, are not limited to just one language. There are between six and fifteen types of Chinese or Sinitic languages depending on who you ask. Of these Chinese languages, the most spoken is Mandarin and is used by over 850 million native speakers.
Other languages important in Chinese translations are Wu that is used by 90 million native speakers, Min that is spoken by over 70 million people and Cantonese with 70 million native speakers. Most of these groups are mutually unintelligible with regard to Chinese translations, though some, like Xiang and the Southwest Mandarin dialects are very similar.
Classification of the Chinese language under ISO 639-3 has identified thirteen sub-languages which are used in Chinese translations. However, despite the identification of these 'varieties of Chinese' there is still contention as to whether these are all languages or whether some are dialects. Correct Chinese translation need to localise the language requirement before undertaking any translation work.
Today, the standardized form of spoken Chinese is Standard Mandarin and this is used as the official language of the government. This means that although there are many other Chinese languages the main language of Chinese translations is Mandarin.
