Some facts about the Chinese language
- Chinese is not actually a single language – it is a group of related language varieties which in many cases are mutually unintelligible. They are all part of the Sino-Tibetan language family.
- What we call Standard Chinese is a standardised form of spoken Chinese based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin. China and Taiwan use Standard Chinese as their official language, it is one of the four official languages of Singapore and Standard Chinese is, also, an official language of the United Nations.
- Cantonese is a prestige variety of Yue and is widely spoken. It is the official language in Hong Kong and Macau.
- The Chinese often describe their languages as dialects, but linguists consider them to be as diverse as a language family. According to American linguist and sinologist Jerry Norman, there are hundreds of mutually incomprehensible varieties of Chinese.
