Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, is in western Asia and southeast Europe. Turkey has a very powerful strategic significance as it sits between Europe and Asia and has ownership over the Turkish Straits. Turkey shares its border with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Iraq and Syria. It also has coastline on both the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
Turkey is a democracy and has member status in NATO, OECD and the G20 and is currently negotiating full membership status with the European Union. Turkey has also formed close economic and political relations with the Middle East and Central Asia countries.
Turkey has a population of nearly 70 million and Turkish, the official language in Turkey, is spoken by about 75 million people worldwide. About 90% of Turkey's population speak Turkish as a first language with Kurdish being most of the remaining percentage. However, most of this population also speak Turkish as a second language.
