Facts about the German language

  • German is an official language in 6 countries (Germany, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein). However, it is spoken widely in 40 other countries.
  • German was the language of commerce and government during the reign of the Habsburg family.  The language covered a large area of Central and Eastern Europe. Until the mid-19th century, it was the language of townspeople throughout most of central Europe.
  • In German, time is counted with respect to the next hour, rather than the previous hour. If a German tells you that it is ‘halb drei (“half three”)’, you might assume that it’s 3:30. However, you’d be wrong: in German, you report time by counting the minutes to the next hour, so “half three” means that it’s half an hour until three: in other words, it’s 2:30.
  • The English and German languages share more than half of their vocabulary — so if you know English, you’re already halfway to speaking German! In comparison, English and French share just 27% of their words.
